About our in-house medical massage therapy training program

Hands On Health offers a unique opportunity for our licensed massage staff; all our practitioners participate in advanced, integrative, and supervision based medical massage therapy training.

Licensed massage therapists graduate from massage school with a minimum of 500 hours of education and a basic background in applying a variety of massage therapy techniques. Traditionally, therapists have depended on accumulating a series of 25-hour continuing education courses to learn advanced techniques such as orthopedic massage, neuromuscular massage therapy, advanced sports massage, and medical massage.

Although valuable in their own right, continuing education courses lack five valuable learning tools that Hands on Health is able to provide to our therapeutic massage practitioners: comprehensive supervision, one-on-one instruction, case studies, real-life experience, and I-NMT testing and certification.

During medical massage training, our therapists work one-on-one and in groups with an advanced therapist and, at times, a willing patient. They learn to apply technique, create a plan of action for each session, anticipate results, create an overall treatment plan, study postural distortions, and communicate with the medical community.

Recent graduates from massage therapy school may practice at Hands on Health as therapeutic massage practitioners. This means that they may apply any skill that they learned in massage school with the intention of helping someone gain pain relief or enjoy reconnecting with how it feels to be relaxed. While they are practicing as therapeutic massage practitioners, they may practice medical massage techniques and frequently provide follow-up or maintenance sessions for the patient when the medical massage therapist is unavailable or the patient is no longer in need of intensive treatments. At any time, these therapists have access to advice, direct and indirect supervision, and new technique suggestions from the more advanced medical massage therapists.

Within the first 6 months of their arrival at Hands on Health, a new practitioner must observe a treatment session, receive a sample of the session, and be observed using treatment routines for the following conditions or complaint area of the body:
TMJD (Temporal Mandibular Joint Dysfunction) - Internal/external jaw muscle release
Suboccipital/Atlas/Axis muscle release
Anterior neck treatment including longus colli, anterior scalenes, and hyoid muscles
Lumbro-sacral pelvic stabilization
Ilio-tibial band release from lateral femoral muscles
Anterior shoulder strain treatments

Within 2, the supervisors and trainee will decide if it is best or desirable to pursue more medical massage training and the practitioner will be eligible for the more comprehensive training, Integrative Neuromuscular Myofascial Technique, a certification program developed by Laura Landsiedel, one of the owners of Hands On Health.
